The New York Mets have retained manager Carlos Mendoza despite a disappointing finish to the 2025 MLB season, president of baseball operations David Stearns confirmed on Monday (September 29).

“I believe Carlos has all the same traits and assets that I believed in when I hired him two years ago,” Stearns told reporters during his exit interview at Citi Field via the New York Post. “I still believe he’s a very good manager, and I think he’s gonna demonstrate that.”

The Mets lost to the Miami Marlins in their final game of the MLB regular season, dropping to a final record of 83-79 and missing the postseason entirely, despite having an MLB-best 45-24 record in mid-June.

“I’m the architect of the team. I’m responsible for it,” he said.

Mendoza, 45, was hired by the Mets in 2024 after spending six seasons as the New York Yankees' infield and later bench coach, having initially joined the franchise's farm system in 2009. The Venezuela native has gone 171-151 (.531 winning percentage) during his first two seasons with the Mets, having the led the franchise to an NLCS appearance, losing to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, in 2024.

The Mets finished third in the NL East during Mendoza's first season and second in 2025.
