The Oklahoma Sooners delivered a stunning upset against the Alabama Crimson Tide with a 23-21 victory on Saturday (November 15) at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The win significantly boosts Oklahoma's chances in the College Football Playoff race.
The Sooners, ranked eleventh, improved their record to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), while the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide fell to 8-2 and 6-1 in the SEC. Oklahoma's defense was pivotal, generating 17 points off three turnovers, including an 87-yard interception return for a touchdown by Eli Bowen. The Sooners also snapped Alabama's 17-game home winning streak, marking the first loss at home for Alabama's coach, Kalen DeBoer.
Oklahoma's quarterback, John Mateer, contributed 161 total yards, including 138 passing yards, and scored a rushing touchdown. Despite Alabama's Ty Simpson throwing for 326 yards and a touchdown, the Crimson Tide's efforts fell short, with Simpson's fourth-down pass to Ryan Williams incomplete in the final moments.
Oklahoma managed just 212 yards of offense but capitalized on Alabama's errors, including a missed 36-yard field goal and a 46-yard punt return that set up their first score. The Sooners' defense held Alabama to just 57 yards over its last four drives.
Coach Brent Venables praised his team's resilience, stating, "This is one of the best teams I've been around in terms of brotherhood and belief in one another." The victory places Oklahoma in a strong position for the playoffs, with upcoming games against Missouri and LSU.
The Crimson Tide, now facing a must-win game against Auburn in the Iron Bowl, must regroup after this unexpected defeat. Alabama's coach, Kalen DeBoer, acknowledged the challenges, noting, "There were just these one-off plays that were the takeaways, and it just became an uphill battle."
