The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed star player Shohei Ohtani on the 15-day injured list due to multiple injuries, including issues with his biceps, knee, and neck. Ohtani, who has missed six of the last seven games, will not travel with the team as they begin a road trip on Friday (September 12) in Miami. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed the decision after Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, noting that Ohtani will stay in Los Angeles to consult with doctors.
The Dodgers have called up top prospect Josue De Paula from Double-A Tulsa to fill in for Ohtani. De Paula, 21, is expected to primarily serve as the designated hitter and will make his major league debut on Friday. He has been a standout in the minors, slashing .302/.400/.539 with 26 home runs and 31 stolen bases this season.
Ohtani has been struggling with injuries for weeks, having not pitched since early July. He attempted to play through the pain but was ultimately unable to continue. Roberts expressed regret for not placing Ohtani on the injured list sooner, stating that the decision was made to ensure Ohtani's health for the postseason. "It's the right thing to do," Roberts said, acknowledging that Ohtani was disappointed but agreed with the decision.
The Dodgers are in the midst of a strong season, with their magic number to clinch a fifth straight division title at six. Despite Ohtani's absence, the team extended their winning streak to seven games with a 14-1 victory over the Reds. The Dodgers hope to have Ohtani back in time for the final week of the regular season and the playoffs. However, Roberts admitted that Ohtani might not be at 100% by then.
In addition to Ohtani, the Dodgers are also dealing with injuries to other key players, including Freddie Freeman, who is battling a right knee issue.
